Student Voice

Continuing the theme of some of our children and young people being adept at bypassing firewalls and security systems, hearing their voices often gives educators an insight into the risks and potential dangers our students face. Increasingly, accreditation visits and school inspection visits look for student voices so what are the benefits of gathering student views?

All too often students may not have the opportunity to disclose abusive situations they are faced with. Young people are often scared to speak up due to a number of factors, including but not restricted to, feelings of not being believed, grooming, and being scared of getting someone into trouble.

Student voice surveys help drive forward strategic planning and decision-making. It also empowers the student body to be engaged in advocating for themselves and those around them. A by-product of this is hopefully that students help to keep their environment safe. Student voice surveys help us to understand our students’ world and the challenges they face both in person and online. This will help us, as educators, to strengthen safeguarding culture and practice.
