Distinction between the private and the public sectors

Private: comprises businesses owned and controlled by individuals or groups of individuals

Public: Comprises organisations accountable to and controlled by central or local governments

For-Profit Commercial

The main features of for-profit (commercial) organisations:

  • Sole traders: Run unincorporated business on their own (small businesses often services)

  • Partnerships: Association of more people carrying on the business. Unlike an incorporated company, a partnership doesn't have "legal personality" of its own (meaning Partners are liable for any debt of the business)

  • Companies/corporations: Confers life on the business as a "separated legal person". Profits and debts are companies

  • Cooperatives

  • Microfinance providers

  • Public-private partnerships (PPP)
