What are the Concepts for this subject?

Concepts in biology are deeply integrated into the course. In many ways, they are at the core of biology, although that is not always apparent from a list of contents. The themes that organise the 2025 biology guide are:

  • Unity and diversity

  • Form and function

  • Interaction and interdependence

  • Continuity of change

The levels of organisation are:

  • Molecules

  • Cells

  • Organisms

  • Ecosystems

These large overarching concepts sit at the core of biology and can serve as a starting point to organise your content. These are not exhaustive lists, and there are undoubtedly many more possible concepts in the course.

Biology Guide (FA 2025), 2023, IB, p31

The above roadmap, found on page 31 of the biology guide, demonstrates how these concepts could be used to move through the course. You could move vertically through increasing levels of organisation or horizontally across the themes. These two pathways are only suggestions. It is not compulsory to follow the roadmap and you are encouraged to create your own.
