Tasks to complete during the end of the school year as a MYP coordinator

Administrative

  • Organise a graduation celebration for Year 5 MYP students going into the Diploma Programme (DP).

Consider using ManageBac to allow MYP Year 5 students make their DP subject choices via the DP Plans Worksheet as part of the graduation/celebration process.

  • It may be worthwhile to have preparatory exams in DP style conditions for MYP Year 5 students if your school does not do eAssessment or any other standardised test for MYP Year 5 students. This can be achieved with AssessPrep and ManageBac’s two-way integration.

  • With the leadership team prepare gifts or videos for teachers that are leaving the school.

Staff

  • Work with teachers to prepare a summer packet of work for the students to get them ready for next year’s material.

  • Ensure that leaving teachers have given their teaching materials either to you or the curriculum leads for next year’s new teachers

  • Prepare an end of year event calendar for teachers so they know special events such as end of year concerts or sports days. Teachers can then be prepared for disruption to classes.

Parents

  • Prepare a transition workshop for incoming MYP parents.

  • Talk with parents about the importance of working with their children over summer to avoid the 'summer slump'.

Students

  • Organise a 'Transition Day' where students move up to MYP.

Teacher-led transition ideas:

  • Discussion about behavior expectations, differences in MYP as compared to primary, ATL skills, Learner Profile, assessment

  • Scavenger hunt around the secondary school

  • Short version of moving to the bells/period breaks

  • Secondary teachers teach an intro version of their class

Student-led transition ideas:

  • Primary students watch the project presentations

  • MYP 1 students are buddied up with primary students throughout the school year

  • MYP students teach primary students about assessment, ATL skills, Learner Profile traits

  • MYP students walk primary students around their classes for a day/week

  • MYP students work with primary students on an inquiry project together

  • Transition the students into their next year levels and have a workshop for students doing the personal/community project next year, so that they can get started researching in the summer.
