Stan has been involved in teaching science in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP) Biology for over 18 years covering the United States, Turkey, China and Thailand. Stan is currently the head of science and DP Biology teacher at International School Bangkok and is the former head of department at the Western Academy of Beijing. Stan is also a trained workshop leader for DP Biology and an internal assessment moderator and examiner for the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). In addition to his extensive DP work, Stan has been involved in MYP sciences, helping write and pilot the MYP science curriculum and upskilling workshop leaders. Finally, Stan is also involved in the IBO as a DP consultant and site visitor.
Russel has been teaching physics for over 22 years, starting in Canada. He then got itchy feet and moved to El Salvador where he started his journey into international education and the IB Programme.
He has now taught DP Physics for over 20 years in El Salvador, China and Vietnam. Russel is currently a MYP and DP Physics teacher at the United Nations International School of Hanoi and former science subject area coordinator at Nanjing International School.
Russel enjoys inquiry learning and was the IBO forum moderator for MYP sciences from 2010-2014 and authored the MYP textbook Physics 4/5 for the International Student. He also consulted and produced physics videos for IBWrite, an online internal assessment tool.
Dave has taught or worked for the IB since 2000. His journey started at the United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) in Singapore as an IB chemistry teacher where he also started moderating internal assessments and marking paper 2 or 3. In Singapore, he also trained as a face-to-face workshop leader and was involved in developing one of the very first online teacher workshops that focussed on internal assessments.
In 2008 he repatriated to England where he has been involved with the IB developing teacher training workshops for the new 2016 course (first teaching August 2014) and the upcoming 2024 course (first teaching August 2022). The latest teacher workshop focuses on the new 'SI' or scientific investigation that will replace the current internal assessment. This journey has also involved writing a students guide to the internal assessment for Oxford Study Courses and the HL and SL parts of the chemistry Pamoja lesson suite.
IB aside, Dave is the course advisor for the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in chemistry that is offered by Pamoja Education and worked with Haremi publishing in reviewing this course prior to its launch.
The authors would like to thank the Center for Teaching & Learning at Kent State University for their work creating a spreadsheet of online resources for science teaching. The shared document embedded below was the inspiration for this project and formed the backbone of our initial research.
Initially developed by the Center for Teaching & Learning at Kent State University, distributed through the Professional and Organization Development (POD) Network in Higher Education via STEM-SIG, further contributions/development by POD members and others, maintained by Ken Yasuhara and LeighAnn Tomaswick.
