General ATL Resources for PYP

Inspiring Inquiry - This site curates resources that are especially helpful when learning more about the ATL skills. There are further links to posters, checklist, presentations, podcasts and more.

Developing Thinkers and Inquirers in the Early Years - Susan Powers outlines the challenges educators can face when working to support the development of effective questioning in very young children. She provides links to Reggio-inspired resources that are especially helpful during the planning stage.

Journeys through Teaching Continuum Examples - Blogger Emma Wheatley aims to support teachers to link theory and principles into classrooms. Here she breaks down Research, Thinking, Communication and Self-Management Skills into continuums from Pre-K to Grade 5 in the form of ‘I Can Statements’. These can provide further support to students during reflection and goal-setting.

Mindfulness in the Classroom - As one of the Self-Management subskills, Mindfulness not only helps students to be aware of body-mind connections and develop strategies to support concentration and overcome distractions but also helps develop other important skills. These resources are especially helpful when planning activities and increasing student agency.

Making ATL’s Visible in PYP PE Tanner Nickel shares how he includes the ATLs both implicitly and explicitly in his environment as a PE teacher. He includes ideas for interactive displays, self-reflection questions and helpful summative assessment ideas that can be easily transferable to other subjects as well.

Follett Publishing PYP Resources - This is a link to a collection of PYP resources that are offered in collaboration with the IB. From ‘Kickstarting the PYP’ which is designed especially for those new to PYP to a series of traditional folktales useful for any classroom library, this is always a great place to shop.

Take a look at the ManageBac ATL Toolkit for further examples of how you might explicitly teach the ATLs. The toolkit includes videos, worksheets, activities, and more.
