Communicating with stakeholders

There are many people involved in the implementation of the PYP. One way in which the coordinator can promote the development of the programme is to develop and foster relationships between and amongst different stakeholder groups. These may include the school community, students, school staff, the pedagogical leadership team and the school’s governing body.
Remember, support is available! ManageBac has a selection of reference documents related to School Community communication. Successful implementation of the programme is dependent on knowledgeable support from each of these groups.
Consistent communication and collaboration with both the pedagogical leadership team and the governing body is an important step in building a solid foundation upon which the PYP can grow and thrive.
As a schedule is established, consider:
How often will meetings occur?
Who will develop the meeting purpose and agenda?
Where will the meetings take place?
Who will facilitate the collaboration?
How will budgetary and financial decisions be made?
How might visiting classrooms during a portion of these meetings help the pedagogical leadership team and governing body better understand the scope of the PYP?
Communication with the school community can help families better understand how and what their students are exploring.
This communication can serve to educate families about PYP vocabulary (such as the attributes of the IB learner profile) and encourage families to support student initiated action outside of the classroom. There are several ways in which communication of the PYP journey may be shared. Some of these may include: newsletters, posts on the school website, videos, informational parent evenings/mornings, etc. It may also be important to consider the language in which information is being shared and communicated.
In addition to sharing general information about the programme, the coordinator will also aid in communication regarding developed policies and the school’s programme of inquiry. Consider how this information will not only be made available to the school community, but also how people may be encouraged to access these documents. As many of these documents are continuously in the process of development and revision, some schools choose to provide viewable access to live documents via the school website. This can ensure that the most current and accurate information is being shared with the community.
