Changes to PYP planner and planning process

PreviousIB approaches to teachingNextOverview

Last updated 2 years ago

In 2018, the IB launched several enhancements and revisions to the Primary Years Programme. These enhancements were designed to become:

  • better for students

  • easier for teachers to implement

  • more flexible for schools

As a result of these enhancements, established PYP schools and teachers have an opportunity to reexamine and assess how their units may evolve to best meet the needs of learners, while schools developing planners for the first time are provided guidance within the updated framework.

While much of the foundational aspects of the PYP remain at the core of planning, those familiar with the programme will notice a shift in some components as a result of the enhancements. There are some new and different elements and some that are presented with a deepened focus and guidance:

Consider how this guidance grounds the work of including all members of the learning community in developing units of inquiry that are concept-driven and transdisciplinary in nature.

Whether you are developing a unit for the first time, or revising a current unit of inquiry, this guidebook will walk you through the process of determining the:

  • overview

  • reflecting and planning

  • designing and implementing

for your comprehensive units of inquiry.
