Additional subject-specific reflections

As referenced earlier in this guidebook, transdisciplinary learning is an important aspect in the successful implementation of the PYP. Approaches to teaching are utilized both inside and outside of the school’s programme of inquiry which allow for students to make connections with their learning across disciplines and contexts.

While there will be specific subject areas that are emphasized within a unit of inquiry, connections to the central idea and lines of inquiry may authentically emerge outside of the unit as well. As an additional checkpoint, teachers may reflect upon the following.

Inside or outside the programme of inquiry:

  • What opportunities are there for students to make connections to the central idea and lines of inquiry or the programme of inquiry?

  • What opportunities are there for students to develop knowledge, conceptual understandings and skills to support the transfer of learning across, between and beyond subjects?
