Horizontal articulation
To ensure a balanced and robust experience for students, schools and teachers are encouraged to systematically examine the programme of inquiry through the lenses of both vertical and horizontal articulation. For a teaching team, it is important to check their units of inquiry for representation of elements of the PYP throughout their units.
Elements to check include key concepts, attributes of the learner profile, approaches to learning and subject specific connections. While it is not likely possible to have an exact distribution of each of these elements, teachers will want to ensure that all aspects are identified and developed throughout the course of the school year.
For example, a teaching team may notice that the key concept of function is identified as a focus for all six transdisciplinary units, while the key concept of change has not been selected. When this occurs, it is important to examine the units of inquiry for potential entry points and exploration of the lagging elements.
